FitTalk

I started the FitTalk section so I could get to the core of some issues in the exercise/nutrition world and get some conversation going with you guys. I plan on blogging each week about something that is on my mind, my guess is that it will usually be about a product or new revolution that is making its way on the scene.

They Are Lying To You

I have a big beef with the fitness industry as a whole and am doing my best to change that. You guys are constantly lied to about exercise & nutrition and there is so much information out there it’s hard to sift through the good. On top of that, unless you have really studied the academics of it, how do you know which companies are lying and which ones are telling the truth. I really feel bad because these companies are giving people the wrong idea about fitness and it is making things harder and harder. This shows with the new Taco Bell Drive Through Diet…really? How did we get to the point where people can possibly think Taco Bell can be a resolution to their weight problems?

$ = Victory

When it comes down to it, the company with the biggest marketing budget will continue to win and the people (you) will continue to lose. Why do you think the P90x did so well? They have an infomercial every single night that runs for about an hour. The P90x has been the most marketed workout over the last two years so they have won. I’m not saying P90 is bad (or good) but lets think about it. How can one workout be good for a 45 year old overweight female and also good for a 19 year old skinny kid?

It’s time to get real with people and honest with them. So that’s what I am here to do. Enough of my rant, lets get on with it.

You’ll Never Look At Food The Same Again

That is the claim that the movie Food Inc. is stating will happen after you watch the movie. It’s true. My goal in this post is to get everyone to watch the movie sometime soon. Food Inc. is not pushing an agenda to you, they are just pushing facts. Throughout the movie they show you how bad our food is for us and just how corrupt the food industry is.

You Are What You Eat

I guarantee that you will get a lot out of the movie and it will change the way you eat. When it comes down to it, you may not want to hear how bad the food is for us but you need to. Why do we care less and less about the food we put in our bodies? If you had a Ferrari, I bet you would never pump 87 octane gas in that thing. Yet you will pump yourself full of antibiotics, pesticides, growth hormone and other nonsense without question. Maybe it’s because the 87 octane tells you exactly what it is and you understand exactly what it is. You know 87 is not as good as 91 octane, so if you spent the money on a nice car that requires better gas, you will get the 91. Most the time, your food doesn’t tell you exactly what it is. Sure you know you are eating a hamburger, but odds are it’s far from just beef. The odds are that it’s a mixture of beef from thousands of cows that have been pumped full of chemicals. Antibiotics so they don’t get sick and rBST so that they grow faster. Then there is the fact that they stand ankle deep in their own manure and eat grains which cows were never meant to eat. The high chance that the cows will develop E.coli forces the food company to create this filler to place in the beef that will basically act as bleach. Im sure that is really healthy to eat.

The Biggest Killer

The facts are simple, our foods suck. Obesity rates, diabetes and heart disease are all at an all time high, with no signs of slowing down. In fact we had to create a term called metabolic syndrome that groups a handful of common diseases (most of which were listed in the last sentence) together because the combination is becoming so prevalent. You are scared of terrorists or drugs? That should be the least of your worries. The very food that you place in your mouth every single day will likely be your killer. The worst part is that it might kill your kids before it kills you. Thirty years ago, a child being obese was almost unheard of. In the next few years it is estimated that 1 in 3 kids will be obese. Food, which is supposed to be the fuel for life is now turning into a death wish.

Pay It Forward

I could go on and keep rambling about this topic, but I don’t want to do that. I want you to do one thing. Go buy a copy of Food Inc. watch it and then pass it on. Open your eyes to this, stop wanting to live in the dark. Give the copy to a friend and ask them to do the same thing. Hopefully this message keeps passing on and the level of awareness begins to rise. We have to do something about this, otherwise things will continue to get worse and we will almost have no hope. This is yet another turning point for our country, either we will change the way we are or we will continue to get worse. Much worse.

You Can Make A Difference

The fix is easy, start to look for organic fruits and vegetables. Start to buy or demand grass-fed beef. Don’t buy fish unless its wild caught. Most importantly, eat foods that were here before businesses started to create them. If you eat foods that would be around regardless of the “food industry” I guarantee you will be healthy. It is your responsibility to do these things. Don’t think that your voice is too small and you can’t make a difference, you can. Every time you buy from a local farmer, you take the money out of these big corporations that are corrupting the food. If everyone acts on this issue than all of the voices will be heard and change will be made. The food industry is in our mercy. If we decide that we are going to abandon their garbage food, they will be forced to change their ways.

Thats all I have for words this week. I beg you to watch Food Inc. and have your eyes opened to the way things are. More importantly start to act and change the way you eat. Watch the movie and tell people about it.
