Last week Oprah dedicated an entire episode to food. She had guest Michael Pollan, author of four best selling books about food, Alicia Silverstone and Steve Ellis, founder of Chipotle. I am a big Michael Pollan fan as I have a lot of similar beliefs as him in regards to food, so I was mostly interested in what he had to say. The majority of the episode was about the documentary “Food Inc” and what it meant to them. Oprah battled the meat industry years ago over her comments about mad cow disease, so she was very cautious with her response to the subject being discussed.
While my video will go into deeper detail here are some of the key statements I got out of the episode:
We used to spend 18% of our income on food and 5% on healthcare. Now we spend 9% income on food and 17% on healthcare.
$1 of highly processed food in a super market can get you up to 1,200 calories. That same dollar in the produce section will only get you 250.
Inuit people have a diet that contains typically 75% fat (some even coming from whale blubber). They have no type 2 diabetes or heart disease.

Michael Pollan’s books are amazing and I highly recommend them. Here is a link for them on Amazon.

Amazon and Oprah have teamed up to discount the price of Food Inc to only $9.99. This is a must buy and see movie. I urge everyone to buy it, watch it and then pass it on to a friend to watch.
